Keeping Xbox 360 Saves On PC

I'll try to be breif but here's my situation,

My Xbox red ringed a couple of weeks ago, so have bought an Elite. It's going to take a couple of weeks to arrive, and I'm going to sell my existing 20gb hard drive to a mate, and use the 120gb when I get it. A data migration cable should be arriving this week, as it is coming from Hong Kong from ebay, as the were about 10% of the price of the official ones.

The listing said it could both transfer HDD to HDD and HDD to PC, so as I want to sell my current HDD now, could I transfer my saves etc. onto my laptop then onto my new 120gb HDD when it arrives.

I only ask because I've heard about save games not working etc when people try and swap them over the internet to gain achievements etc.

I guess the saves are somehow owned by my gamertag, but was just double checking before I do it and then wipe the old 20gb HDD.

Buy a memory card instead? Transfer that way.
